Ford F-150 Lightning vs Standard F-150
With the promise of electric vehicles having a significant emissions benefits over conventional vehicles, can the cost of electric vehicles reach parity with conventional vehicles? There is lots of excitement about Ford's new F-150 Lightning! But how much more expensive is the F-150 Lightning versus the standard F-150? We did an analysis based on what is known about the F-150 Lightning. With a targeted EPA estimated range of 230 miles, a battery capacity of 170 kWh, and a retail price of $39,974, compared to the standard F-150 with 21 miles per gallon and a retail price of $28,940, the F-150 Lightning is cheaper by $5,000 over the life of the truck. Even without a federal or state tax credit for buying an electric vehicle, the cost of the F-150 Lightning is similar to the standard F-150. However, with the F-150 Lightning, the owner can use the "2.4kW Pro Power Onboard – 120V outlets: two in the cab, two in the bed, and four in the front trunk" or the "available 9.6-kilowatt Pro Power Onboard – with enough power to rip up to 30 miles of half-inch plywood on a single charge on the extended-range battery" to tackle any project with enough power to get the job done. So not only is the F-150 Lightning cost competitive, the truck can reduce emissions, and be a workhorse for whatever project is needed.
