EIA DATA TOOLS, APPS, AND MAPS

Tools to customize searches, view specific data sets, study detailed documentation, and access time-series data.

NERC Key Grid Players

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is an international regulatory authority whose mission is to assure the reliability and security of the bulk power system in North America. This resource has links, information, and maps to Regional Entities and Balancing Authorities.

FERC Electric Power Markets

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is an independent agency that regulates the interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil. This resource provides links to system operators across the U.S., with links to their websites and reports.

The U.S. Drought Monitor is a weekly map of drought conditions produced jointly by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Find it here.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics

Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), part of the Department of Transportation (DOT) is the preeminent source of statistics on commercial aviation, multimodal freight activity, and transportation economics, and provides context to decision makers and the public for understanding statistics on transportation.

The Keeling Curve

The Scripps CO2 measurements at Mauna Loa are based on measurements made with an analyzer that provide a daily record of atmospheric carbon dioxide that can be seen here.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) supports research into our world’s frozen realms: the snow, ice, glaciers, frozen ground, and climate interactions that make up Earth’s cryosphere. Find out about the Greenland Ice Sheet melt today.

NASA Earth Observatory Image of the Day

The NASA Earth Observatory’s mission is to share with the public the images, stories, and discoveries about the environment, Earth systems, and climate that emerge from NASA research, including its satellite missions, in-the-field research, and models. The Earth Observatory produces the image of the day, as well as global maps like Aerosol Size, Land Surface Temperature, and Snow Cover.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Resources for climate assessments and climate data. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the international body for assessing the science related to climate change. The IPCC was set up in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to provide policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation.

National Ice Center

Naval Ice Center (NAVICECEN), NOAA, and the Coast Guard work together to operate the National Ice Center and accomplish the national mission of providing global ice analyses and forecasts. The USNIC Daily Ice Edge product depicts the daily sea ice pack in red (8-10/10ths or greater of sea ice), and the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) in yellow. The marginal ice zone is the transition between the open ocean (ice free) and pack ice.

The International Emissions Trading Association Reports

IETA’s Carbon Market Business Briefs offer executives a quick and easy way to learn about the variety of emissions trading models around the world.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory  Flow Charts

Amazing flow charts! Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) produced the U.S. energy flow chart. LLNL has also published charts depicting carbon (or carbon dioxide potential) flow and water flow at the national level as well as energy, carbon, and water flows at the international, state, municipal, and organizational (e.g., Air Force) level.

International Energy Agency

The International Energy Agency (IEA) provides reports and data on international energy.

Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data

This site provides National foundation-level geospatial data within the open public domain that can be useful to support community preparedness, resiliency, research, and more. The data is available for download as CSV, KML, Shapefile, and accessible via web services to support application development and data visualization.

The Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) collects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) data from large emitting facilities, suppliers of fossil fuels and industrial gases that result in GHG emissions when used, and facilities that inject carbon dioxide underground.

Climate Change Adaptation Resource Center

EPA’s Adaptation Resource Center (ARC-X) is an interactive resource to help local governments effectively deliver services to their communities even as the climate changes. Decision makers can create an integrated package of information tailored specifically to their needs. Once users select areas of interest, they will find information about: the risks posed by climate change to the issues of concern; relevant adaptation strategies; case studies illustrating how other communities have successfully adapted to those risks and tools to replicate their successes; and EPA funding opportunities.

Power Plants and Neighboring Communities

Use EPA's maps to view key demographics and information about nearby power plants that may help identify a community's potential vulnerability to environmental concerns.

Use Sierra Club's map to find the U.S. communities committed to 100% clean energy, currently powered by 100%, and/or running a local campaign.

Utilities’ path to a carbon-free energy system

Smart Electric Power Alliance's (SEPA) map displays carbon-reduction targets adopted by individual electric utilities, as well as individual electric utilities that are subject to a state-level 100% requirement.

Guide to 100% Clean Energy States

Clean Energy States Alliance's (CESA) guide provides state officials and other stakeholders with information about the states that have adopted 100% clean energy goals. It includes information about the plans and other implementation reports that some of those states have produced.
